Pilgrims from as far as Samar come to see John Bosco’s relic
Monday, December 13, 2010
THE relic of St. John Bosco arrived in Cebu yesterday, drawing hundreds of devotees to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Punta Princesa, where a mass was held in his honor.
Officiated by Fr. George Militante, Father Provincial of the Salesians of Don Bosco South Province, the mass was attended by devotees coming from as far as Dumaguete City and Borongan, Samar.
Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal also urged Cebuanos, particularly the youth, to
visit the relic.
Vidal said St. John Bosco is known throughout the world for his dedication to the
education and formation of the youth.
St. John Bosco, popularly known as Don Bosco, founded the Salesian Congregation and was known as the “father and teacher of the youth.”
Sealed case
Toured around the world since April last year, the relic consists of the saint’s right hand, which is preserved in a sealed case and inserted in the chest of his wax replica.
The tour, which will cover 130 countries, is part of the activities lined up for the
saint’s 200th anniversary celebration on Aug. 16, 2015.
“If we follow him, if we listen to him, if we put his teachings into practice…we are certain to reach sanctity,” Militante said in his homily.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, who heard the mass standing, said Don Bosco exemplified humility and hard work.
Ananias Manreal of the Knights of Columbus, who helped manage the crowd during the welcome procession of the relic, said the youth should emulate Don Bosco.
“Many youths have become successful in life because of him,” he said.
“He continues to inspire the youth,” said Nenita Generalao, a 55-year old churchgoer.
Before it goes to Manila on Dec. 23, the relic will be brought to the different Don
Bosco centers in the province, Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, and Mary Help of Christian Schools in Minglanilla.
An Italian priest, Don Bosco died in January 1888 and was canonized on Easter Sunday of 1934.
He is the patron saint of editors, youths, school children, students, magicians, apprentices and young workers.
