Rock opera goes Kapampangan
April 6, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Jesus Christ Superstar, the world renowned rock opera by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, will go Kapampangan as the newly formed Artists League of Pampanga stages its version dubbed “Batwin Hesukristo.”
In a press conference cum preview of the adaptation on Saturday evening at Galleria Kalinangan in Telabastagan, writer-director Jayar Hipolito said their choice of the once-controversial opera, reportedly culled from the story of Judas, has been agreed by the group, making it the first in the history of local theater.
“We will launch it first as a concert on May 21 at Holy Angel University. Then we will mount this on stage in September this year as a full Broadway musical. Our choice came because we felt na naging issue iyang JCS at siya lang ang nasa point of view ni Judas. Mas human ang tingin ni Judas despite na negative ang tingin ng tao sa kanya. Besides, it can be adapted in varying cultures and genre like we contextualized it in Pampanga na parang si Hesus ay nabuhay dito bilang Kapampangan,” Hipolito told Sun.Star Pampanga.
The league’s translator, actor Kelvin Vistan, said adapting the opera into Kapampangan is not really that easy.
“The content of the opera is too inclined towards the American language. There are a lot of versions, that if you follow the libretto, it must be technically syllabicated to fit the Kapampangan language, including the phrasing. Pero ang pinakamahirap ay iyung content and ideas na ipapasok mo sa Kapampangan. It must be absorbed and translated into Kapampangan that could be understood by the masses,” said Vistan.
For Prof. Edwin Lumanog of Magsilbi Tamu Brass Band 919, providing the back-up ensemble according to the musical score would be a breeze since he was part of a UP version of the play and that he had materials on hand.
“I thought at first it would be a full orchestra but I was told the budget wasn’t enough. So for the adaptation, I am looking at just a four piece band, which I might augment with trumpet, trombone and flute. The score that I will use will be the same score used by Andrew Webber,” he said, adding the “teaser-concert” must clear the political aspects of the opera.
Janet Tagaso, “Batwin Hesukristo” executive producer, sees the historical staging of the Kapampangan version of JCS as a boost to their desire to push for cultural development.
“Promoting our local art and culture will influence other cultures as well. Batwin Hesukristo will be able to influence other provinces to promote other local arts. We need to revive the cultural superstructure per se and veer away from presenting a commercial Broadway musical and then create new writers and actors. It’s time to present what is ours to a global audience and overcome barriers like budgets and lack of awareness,” she said.
