San Fernando bags healthy initiative award

Thursday, December 9, 2010

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Health (DOH) lauded the City Government of San Fernando, under the leadership of Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, for the implementation of its Task Force Habitat.

The award, dubbed as Healthy City Initiative, was handed by Center for Health Development regional director Benito Arca during the 2010 Regional Recognition Day for Health Partners, which was attended by nearby cities and local government units.

City of San Fernando’s entry for the award is its Task Force Habitat.

Through the creation of the task force, the city is continually creating and achieving better physical and social environments and expanding these community resources, which enable people to mutually support each other in performing all functions of life and in developing their maximum potential.

The main objective of the task force is to promote orderliness through the implementation of the ordinances and resolutions of the city. Among these are proper waste disposal, which includes anti-littering campaign in every street of the city, removal of building encroachment, traffic monitoring and no-smoking law, among others.

“Sa pamamagitan nito [Task Force Habitat], nabantayan ang kalinisan sa siyudad at kapag malinis ang kapaligiran susunod na ang kalusugan ng ating mga mamamayan (Because of the task force, the city’s cleanliness is monitored. If the environment is clean, the people’s good health is guaranteed),” said Dr. Eloisa Aquino, City Health Officer.

Aquino noted that Habitat personnel strictly monitor the city’s cleanliness, particularly in the Poblacion Area, where the markets and other establishments are located.

She also said that early next year, the city will vie for a national award for the successful implementation of the Republic Act against smoking.

Aquino pointed out that the city also has an anti-smoking ordinance, and Habitat is its enforcer as well.

Rodriguez, for his part, said that one way of improving the public’s quality of life is through sanitation and health awareness, thus establishing education and health programs as the city’s priority projects.

“Kasabay ng pagtatayo natin ng mga eskwelahan ay ang pagpapanatili ng kaayusan at kalinisan sa lungsod. Sa ganitong paraan, daragsa ang mga investors dahil kaaya-aya ang ating lugar at competitive ang ating mga mamamayan (Along with the construction of school buildings is the maintenance of peace and order and cleanliness in the city. This way, investors will be encouraged to come here because our city will be an ideal site for business and the Pampanngeños are competitive),” Rodriguez said.

Other awards given during the event were Healthy School, Healthy Hospital, Healthy Prison, and Healthy Barangay. (PR)
