SM Foundation launches donate-a-book campaign
April 27, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The SM Foundation Inc. is bringing back its Donate-A-Book campaign starting this week until May 20 in all SM malls nationwide to gather book donations for Day Care Centers in the country.
SM Pampanga public relations officer Rain Cervantes told Sun.Star Pampanga that the event is in partnership with Bato Balani Foundation (BBFI), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), National Book Development Board (NBDB) and Children International Philippines Inc.
“The campaign is geared toward soliciting books and other reading materials from students, book lovers, and generous shoppers for the benefit of many underprivileged children and youth,” Cervantes said.
Besides the collection of books for distribution to Day Care Centers and barangay libraries across the country, the project also aims to help develop interest for reading, improve functional literacy and enhance comprehension and creative skills of students and out-of-school youths.
This year’s Donate-A-Book media partners from Pampanga are Sun.Star Pampanga, RW 95.1, Insider Ini, Central Luzon Daily, Central Luzon Newsweek, Punto! Central Luzon and Central Luzon Business Week.
“Target beneficiaries are the indigent students and youth residing in Bulacan, Benguet, Pangasinan, and Pampanga in North and Central Luzon,” Cervantes added.
Other beneficiaries are from Rizal, Laguna, Batangas, Quezon, Cavite, and Bicol. In Visayas and Mindanao, recipients will be from Panay Island, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Cagayan de Oro, and Davao.
In launching the Donate-A-Book project 11 years ago, SM’s immediate concern is to help address book shortage in public schools nationwide.
Today, the foundation’s book drive has included community reading centers and public libraries as beneficiaries.
Its commitment goes beyond collecting more books – promoting interest in reading, improving comprehension and helping develop the communication skills of its beneficiaries are among the project’s concerns.
