Spokesman: Stop criticizing Corona since case has been filed

Corona since his impeachment case will soon be heard in the Senate.
“The President, his spokespersons have said their piece already. I suggest we should refrain from talking about this issue already,” SC spokesperson Midas Marquez said.
The past few days saw the exchange of tirades between Corona and President Benigno Aquino III, who accused the Chief Justice of shielding allegedly corrupt officials in the past government, particularly former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima even described Corona as a “walking constitutional violation” for accepting the appointment as Chief Justice despite a ban on appointing government officials during the election season last year.
“More than President Aquino appointing a Chief Justice he holds by the neck, which he never got to do, it is Arroyo who appointed the Chief Justice, Corona, so that she can hold him by the neck long after her term was over,” she said on Thursday.
This observation was reportedly manifested last month after the Court issued a travel clearance for Arroyo and her husband even if she was under investigation for poll sabotage and plunder raps.
Marquez, however, advised Aquino and his allies to tone down their language since the growing animosity between the two branches of government is counter-productive, especially in the resolution of cases.
“With these kinds of statements, it will be difficult for both the Supreme Court and the Department of Justice to work together. We should be more responsible for issuing statements that can divide us,” he said.
Corona had said that resignation crossed his mind amid the attacks against him and his family but he chose to face the charges and fight for acquittal in the Senate.
Calls for Corona to resign snowballed as militants trooped to the High Court asking him to do just that.
Akbayan Party spokesperson Risa Hontiveros said Corona’s removal from public office is necessary to “restore integrity to the High Court and remove Arroyo’s last defenses.”
“We have waited for Corona to prove his independence, to no avail. He has consistently towed the line and gave in to every whim of Arroyo. He should be removed to allow the Supreme Court to reclaim its integrity and independence,” she said.
For her part, Leah Navarro of the Black and White movement criticized the alleged court holiday as being “prejudicial to public interest.”
According to Navarro, “the court holiday was an abuse of power by Corona at the expense of hundreds of citizens expecting the courts to be open and dispense justice.”
She said the walkout of judges and court employees in different parts of the country last Wednesday had inconvenienced the public who have to contend with the “slow pace of justice” in the Philippines.
What irks the people even more, she said, is that the court holiday was only done to shore up support for Corona.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
