Town execs urged to resolve concerns on environment

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A top Catholic Church official in Pampanga has advised all mayors to stop the blaming game and instead gather their efforts in following environmental laws.
Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said Kapampangan mayors should act together in resolving the ballooning solid and toxic waste problems in the province.
“Kailangan po na magbalik tayo sa original na objective ng batas and follow its provisions,” Aniceto said.

The priest was referring to the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001 or Republic Act 9003, which has ordered the closure of all open and controlled dumpsites.
The law also requires all local government units to create a materials recovery facility unit and assist in the segregation of waste starting from the household level.
“Hindi lang ang Church ang may mandate to help the environment, dapat lahat tayo kasi ang environment ay regalo ng Diyos,” Aniceto added.
“Creation is a gift of God kaya kailangan tayo lahat ay magsama-sama para ‘yong original beauty and purity of the cosmos should be protected.”
When the Environmental Management Bureau in Central Luzon issued a closure order for 16 open dumpsites in the province, San Fernando City Mayor Oscar Rodriguez and Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan denied maintaining illegal dumpsites in their areas.
Aside from the illegal dumpsite issue, Kapampangan mayors have been passing the blame on each other regarding the toxic waste build-up in Macabebe town. (Charlene Cayabyab)
