Toxic waste threatens seafood industry

MASANTOL — The seafood industry in several villages here, including Barangay Balibago is threatened by the growing problem on toxic waste.
Barangay officials are worried about their main livelihood due to toxic waste coming from the Pampanga River.
Balibago barangay chairwoman Virginia Lacap said the check gate designed to control the entry of toxic waste from the river has been damaged long time before she assumed office.
Lacap said they have reported the matter to the authorities and asked help for the repair of the check gate but what they received are all promises. She added that the village funds are so small that it would not be enough to ensure the repair of the check gate.
Lacap said several years ago she has requested Congresswoman Anna York Bondoc (4th district) for the rehabilitation of the check gate. Bondoc however remained silent on the request, according to the village chief.
She said Bondoc promised them assistance. In fact, her staff already inspected the check gate. It’s been four years since they reported the problem to Bondoc.
The problem has also aggravated flooding in the area which affects more than 100 families during high tide.
The flood waters suspected to be contaminated with the toxic waste freely comes in and out the village without the check gate.
“Hindi na nako-control ang tubig galing sa Pampanga River dahil may diprensiya nga yung check gate namin. Sana matulungan naman kami ng mga nasa poder ng kapangyarihan para maayos sa lalung madaling panahon,” Lacap claimed.(Herbert P. Mapiles)
