Typhoon Mina kills 6
Sunday, August 28, 2011
MANILA — Six people from northern Luzon provinces died after Typhoon Mina (international codename: Namnadol) made landfall in Cagayan province, triggering landslides on Saturday.
Mina buried a hillside house before dawn, killing two young siblings in Pangasinan province’s San Fabian town, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.
The council identified the fatalities as Reajen Bautista, 6, and her brother John Rey Bautista, 5, from Barangay Rabon.
The siblings were buried in the mud and other debris for more than two hours before rescuers recovered their bodies, said Milchito Santos, regional civil defense chief.
Two other siblings from Baguio City also died after a garbage dump’s concrete wall collapsed, burying three shanties under tons of garbage.
The NDRRMC identified the victims as Revillar Flores, 13, and Apolinario Flores, 10, who were swept about 300 yards (meters) downhill.
Another fatality in Baguio City identified as Floro Sulliven, 32, of Barangay Kias, died after he was covered by a landslide.
Nelson Vergara, 68, of Barangay Bagong Sirang, Baras, Catanduanes, was also reported dead.
Vergara was previously reported missing but his body was retrieved by coastal residents of Barangay Putsan Darao around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
Six other people also went missing due to the typhoon.
The NDRRMC identified them as:
1. Fred Nantes Sr., 48, of Barangay Carisquis, Luna, La Union
2. Romeo Dang-alan Jr., of Barangay Matue, Gregorio del Pilar, Ilocos
Sur
3. Roger Marqued, of San Emilio, Ilocos Sur
4. Apolonio Licupa, 70, Liman West, Rizal, Kalinga
5. Dagul Joaquin, 23, of Dilong, Tubo, Abra
6. Gregorio Padua, 29, of Dilong, Tubo, Abra
Meteorologists said “Mina” hit land near Cagayan province’s Gonzaga town at 7:55 a.m. Saturday.
About 200 people, who evacuated a coastal village in Gonzaga town because storm surges flooded their community, were advised later Saturday that it was safe to return home after the typhoon eased, said Norma Talosig, the region’s civil defense director.
Some 2,888 families representing 11,720 people in La Union and Catanduanes were also affected by the typhoon.
Power interruption, meanwhile, was experienced in Kalinga, Cagayan, and some parts of Isabela, including Santiago City and San Pablo, the NDRRMC said.
The government has prepositioned P21.16 million worth of standby funds and relief supplies.
Flights cancelled
Bad weather induced by “Mina” also sidelined nine domestic flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 and another six flights at the Manila Domestic Terminal on Saturday.
The flights include 2P 014 (Manila to Tuguegarao), 2P 015 (Tuguegarao to Manila), 2P 022 (Masbate to Manila), 5J 504 (Manila to Tugegarao),
5J 505 (Tuguegarao to Manila), 5J 404 (Manila to Laoag), 5J 405 (Laoag to Manila), 5J 529 (Manila to Busuanga), 5J 530 (Busuanga to Manila), DG 601 (Manila to Basco), DG 602 (Basco to Manila), Z2 260 (Manila to Masbate), Z2 261 (Masbate to Manila), Z2 410 (Manila to Busuanga), and Z2 411 (Busuanga to Manila).
Of the cancelled flights, six were Cebu Pacific, three Air Philippines, two Sea Air, and four Zest Air.
International flights were not affected and operations at NAIA terminals 1 and 2 were normal, the NDRRMC said.
Storm signals
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), in its 11 p.m. Saturday bulletin, said the typhoon was spotted at 100 kilometers north of Aparri, Cagayan as of 10 p.m.
“Mina” packed maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph. It is forecast to move north northwest at seven kph.
Pagasa said that by Sunday evening, “Mina” is expected to be 190 km west northwest of Basco, Batanes; 180 km north northwest of Basco by Monday evening; and 290 km north northwest of Basco by Tuesday evening.
Residents in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.
Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone
Estimated rainfall amount is from 15-25 mm per hour within the 600 km diameter of the typhoon, Pagasa added. (AP/Sunnex)
