Urdaneta opens sanitary landfill to other towns

URDANETA CITY, Pangasinan — Starting Monday, the city is opening its engineered sanitary landfill to other local government units (LGU) in Pangasinan.
Several LGUs are already set to sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Mayor Amadeo Gregorio Perez IV.
After thorough research and study, the City Council passed City Ordinance 023-2011 last September 19, 2011 that sets and imposes tipping fees of P900 per ton on the disposal of residual non-recyclable wastes at the city’s landfill, City Administrator Ronald San Juan said.
The landfill is located at Sitio Calegu, Barangay Catablan.
Present during the session presided by Vice Mayor Onofre Gorospe were City Councilors Franco Paolo del Prado Sr., Mark Joseph Andrada, Blesildo Sumera, Jennylin Sison, Peter Jason Agsalud, Adolfo Basco, Amor Lachica, Reynaldo Duca, and Liga ng mga Barangay President Fernando Almendares.
San Juan said local governments that expressed intentions in using the city’s landfill included the towns of Sta. Barbara, Mapandan, Alcala, Bautista, and Pozorrubio. The signing of the MOA will make the initial verbal agreement official and legal.
San Juan clarified that a municipality is allowed to dump a certain tonnage a week of residual-non recyclable wastes.
“Our sanitary landfill can only contain so much,” he said.
Urdaneta is the only LGU in the province of Pangasinan to have an engineered sanitary landfill. The City Government spent P220 million on the facility through a loan obtained from the Land Bank of the Philippines.
The project was started by former city mayor now Manila Economic Cooperation Office chairman Amadeo Perez Jr. and continued by his son and namesake.
