World wine industry is robust

January 20, 2011
Vinexpo insists the world wine industry is in good health – despite big companies looking to dispose of assets.

The world’s largest wine company, Constellation Brands, offloaded its UK and Australian division at a mere A$290 million. It said it wanted to concentrate on premium wines from the US. Meanwhile, Brown-Forman, Foster’s Group and Remy Cointreau are all considering selling their wine divisions this year.

Releasing data compiled by the International Wine and Spirit Research (IWSR), Vinexpo’s chairman, Xavier de Eizaguirre, said at a press conference: “Big companies, especially those with spirit divisions want a quick return and high profits.”Some of these companies want to concentrate on offering premium wines, therefore, the fact they are offloading their wine division does not mean the wine industry is not in good health.”

The IWSR figures showed a healthy outlook for the UK, which has overtaken France for consumer spending on wine and consolidated its position as the world’s biggest wine importing market by value and volume.

Wine consumption in the UK rose 1.1% in 2010 as opposed to 2009, with the total amount consumed rising to 147.12 million 9-litre cases. The rate of consumption in the UK is expected to increase by a further 2.9% between 2010-2014.

Consumers are trading up to over £6.15 per bottle making it the second largest consumer market worldwide, ahead of France but behind the US.

But the average price of a bottle of wine is stable at around £5.21 and is expected to remain at that level for the next five years.White wine is the UK’s favourite colour accounting for nearly 45% of wine consumption.

Consumption of rosé wines, fuelled by consumers switching from red to rosé saw UK sales increase 93% between 2005-2009. Rosé is forecast to rise by a further 11.5% between 2010-2014. Sparkling wine consumption also grew 16.1% from 2005-2009. It is expected to rise 12% to 2014, according to the data.

Emerging markets in Asia and Eastern Europe will continue to prosper by 2014, but these are not expected to match the top western markets in value and volume terms.

Spirits
UK consumption of spirits increased 6.1% between 2005- 2009, reaching 29.58m cases with a predicted increase of a further 4.6% between 2010-2014.

Vodka was the star, growing 20% since 2005 to 8.43m cases in 2010. It is expected to rise 6.7% between 2010-2014.

Tequila consumption also grew 33.3% between 2005-2009. But between 2005-2009, Cognac and Scotch whisky consumption decreased by 13.2% and 10.8% respectively.

The report predicts that between 2010-2014 whisky consumption will stabilise at current levels while Cognac will continue to fall over the same period, down to 8%.Vinexpo will take place this year in Bordeaux between 19 and 23 June.
