‘Sendong’ kills nearly 60

MANILA (3rd Update, 11:50 a.m.) — Flash floods triggered by Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi) have killed nearly 60 people in the southern Philippines, with many more missing across vast regions, officials said Saturday.
Lemuel Gunda, head of a rescue team in Cagayan de Oro City, said at least 40 bodies were recovered there.
Mayor Lawrence Cruz of nearby Iligan said that at least 15 people were killed in his city alone and that many more were missing.

Those missing included a radio broadcaster who was swept away while trying to save his neighbors, Cruz said.
The chief of the national disaster rescue agency, Benito Ramos, said that officials were still getting reports from the field and that casualties would likely rise.
Ramos said the dead included at least nine people in a single village in Lanao del Norte province, with floodwaters surging in the middle of the night and quickly reaching rooftops, trapping many residents and causing them to drown.
The floods were triggered by Sendong, which dumped heavy rains over the southern Mindanao region overnight.
“Massive flooding had been reported over the region, especially in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City,” Ramos said, adding that tens of thousands of people sought shelter on high ground.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, meanwhile, said on Saturday assistance for those affected by Tropical Storm Sendong is on its way.
Valte said President Benigno Aquino III had already directed concerned agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to ensure that the government’s assistance will reach flood-stricken communities.
“We are doing our best to make sure that the government’s assistance will reach you,” Valte said in a radio interview.
Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman said the DSWD has already put up 10 evacuation centers in Cagayan de Oro while search and rescue units were already mobilized in Iligan City.
In its 9 a.m. update Saturday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 20 are confirmed to be casualties while one individual remains missing in Cagayan de Oro.
Sendong made landfall in Baganga town, Davao Oriental, Friday afternoon.
In its 10 a.m. weather bulletin on Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Sendong was spotted 180 kilometer west of Dumaguete City, packing winds of 75 kilometer per hour (kph) and gustiness up to 90 kph.
It is expected to cross Palawan Saturday night and at 300 km west southwest of Puerto Princesa City by Sunday morning.
Signal number 2 is hoisted in Palawan, Southern Negros and Zamboanga del Norte, while signal number 1 remains hoisted in Southern Cebu, Siquijor and Northern Negros, Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental as well as Cuyo island.
In Cebu City, almost 2,900 seafaring passengers were stranded on Friday, after Coast Guard authorities stopped 21 vessels from sailing, for their own safety.(AP/Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
