2 city cops hit for ‘protecting’ swindler
Sunday, January 16, 2011
ANGELES CITY — At least two operatives of Police Station 6 in this city are said to be allegedly “protecting” a suspected swindler, hampering the investigation of the case, according to a friend of the victim.
Both the victim and her friend asked not to be named for fear of reprisal pending their complaints, but they nevertheless shared their belief that the suspect is reportedly a nephew of a high-ranking police official.
“He goes around with two police escorts. Time and again mobile patrols from the police station would stop at my friend’s house seemingly to harass my friend. I heard that my friend has been coerced into signing something about the complaint,” the victim’s friend told Sun.Star Pampanga.
With this, the victim’s friend also issued an appeal to elements of Police Station 6 to refrain from allegedly protecting the suspect.
Officials at Police Station 6, however, denied the allegations and said they are not protecting anybody as nobody is above the law. Neither was any victim being harassed, they added.
The victim’s friend and her kin expressed hope the police would allow the investigation to move on.
Police records obtained by Sun.Star Pampanga Sunday showed that on November 16 last year, the victim — a casino worker — filed a complaint at Police Station 6 against one Julius Brian Dizon Turla, 27, a nurse in Canada and now residing at Barangay Salapungan in this city.
The victim alleged in his complaint that the suspect borrowed P59,000 in cash, promising to pay the whole balance by the first week of December 2010.
But on November 12, the suspect paid only P10,000, the complaint stated.
In a letter received by the victim, the suspect said he could afford to pay only around P30,000 to P35,000 and did not indicate a time frame as to when the rest will be settled.
The victim, admitting that Turla was an old-time friend during their college days, said she trusted him with the money but later worried about not being paid at all.
The victim and the suspect were supposed to meet at E-Square in Parañaque City, allegedly to discuss an employment opportunity for the latter in Canada. But instead, the victim said they met at a Starbucks outlet at Trinoma in Quezon City where the victim cried harassment.
The friend of the victim, in an interview with Sun.Star Pampanga Sunday, said: “The suspect is making it appear that the victim is his girlfriend to get away from paying his debts. Siniraan pa nga siya ng todo.”
The victim’s kin said they have elevated their complaint to the National Bureau of Investigation. (Jovi T. De Leon)
