3 killed in Angeles City fire

ANGELES CITY — Three persons died in a fire that gutted a two-storey apartment along Miranda Street in Barangay Santo Rosario here Tuesday dawn.
The city fire department identified the fatalities as Leandro Dumalo, 57; his wife Maria Cristina Dumalo, 56; and daughter Claudine Joy Dumalo, 17.
Senior Inspector Jimmy Suba, city fire marshal, said the victims’ bodies were found inside the master’s bedroom at the second floor of the apartment. The victims were trapped because their apartment’s windows have iron grills.
“Wala pong fire escape yung apartment kaya hindi nakalabas yung mag anak nung magkaroon ng sunog (The apartment has no fire exit so the victims failed to escape),” Suba said.
Fire investigators estimated the damage to property to more or less P300,000.
The fire, which broke out around 2:55 a.m. and extinguished at 3:20 a.m., reached first alarm, Suba said. Initial investigation revealed that the fire, caused by faulty electrical wiring, started at the first floor of the apartment.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims.
“March is fire prevention month. Ironically, my distant relative and ka-barangay died while we were educating Angeleños to be extra careful and be aware of the danger of fire,” Pamintuan said.
He also urged the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the City Engineering Office to educate the people on fire prevention through the media.
He also stressed that the City Council may pass an ordinance that will compel people to include fire exits in the construction plans of their houses. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
