ANGELES CITY — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) warned the public against using firecrackers, which has turned out to be the major cause of accidents and fire incidents during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The BFP prohibits the testing of firecrackers in retail stores along the streets, designating places – usually open ones – where the firecrackers can be set off.

The police, on the other hand, regulate the quality of firecrackers and prohibit powerful ones which may cause serious injuries to people.

Firecracker retailers are required to secure permits from the BFP and PNP, Supt. Rolly Menodza, Mabalacat police chief, said.

He said that many vendors are still securing permits and clearances as of Monday.

Chief Insp. Jimmy Suba, Angeles City fire marshal, said his office has also been educating the public through radio programs about the use of firecrackers and fire prevention.

Fire officers, according to Suba, will visit malls all over the city to post signage that bears tips on preventing incidents during the New Year revelry.

Suba advised the public to take precautionary measures to avoid accidents.

Other government agencies, including the Department of Health (DOH), Office of the Press Secretary, among others, also discourage people from using firecrackers and advise them to use items like horns or household tools to make noise while welcoming the New Year.
