Meursault Wine
Meursault is a large village in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. Meursault wines are held in similarly high regard as those of its southern neighbor Puligny-Montrachet, despite not having any Grand Cru vineyards to speak of. Rather than any one world-class vineyard, it is Meursault’s reliably high quality Premier Cru and commune level wines which are responsible for its good reputation. The most famous of these are those at the southern end of the commune, namely the Charmes, Perrieres and Genevrieres sites.
In addition to its official Premier Crus, the commune has a number of well-respected lieu-dit vineyards, whose names are commonly cited on wine labels. Lieu-dit sites are those which do not qualify for the Premier Cru title but which are known as a source of high quality grapes. Promotion to (and even relegation from) Premier Cru status is by no means impossible for these sites, and classification reviews are becoming more frequent. The last review of Meursault’s vineyard status was in late 2001.
Meursault’s vinous output is almost entirely white wines, made from Chardonnay grapes; less than five percent of its vine rows are planted with Pinot Noir destined for red wines. In fact, red wines from a small cluster of vineyards at the northern end of the commune are even produced under the appellation of Meursault’s northern neighbor, Volnay. These vineyards all fall under the Volnay Santenots title for their red wines, but the Meursault Santenots Blancs, Santenots du Milieu and Les Plures titles for their whites.
The commune’s wines are renowned for being among the richer, more full-bodied Burgundy whites, with tasting notes commonly citing notes of butter, almonds and grilled hazelnuts alongside the finer citrus fruit and mineral elements. The geological differences across the commune’s vineyards are famously discernible in their wines.
Located on the limestone-rich slopes of the Cote d’Or escarpment, Meursault’s vineyards are blessed with classic Burgundy terroir. It occupies a site at the entrance to the Saint-Romain valley, a hiatus in the Cote d’Or, leading to a variety of orientations in the local hillsides, from due south through due east. This variation is just one contributing factor in the variation of styles in Meursault wines.
The commune measures just over 3 miles (5km) from north to south, still small, but relatively large when compared to its smaller neighbor Puligny-Montrachet, which barely stretches to 1.2 miles (2km). These small distances encompass multiple appellations and hundreds of vineyard sites belonging to countless families, and are a reminder of the fine-grained nature of the terroir here, and of the complexity of Burgundy’s labeling system.
