Vinhos Verdes

The very mention of the term wine fleets myriad images within the mind reminding one of the plethoras of Hollywood movies which portray their screenplays strung together against the backdrop of the vineyards and people engaged in wine cultivation. Wine drinking is a pleasure activity and it is not confined to any particular geographical region but rather across cultures and nationalities. One of the prominent reasons for the popularity of wine is the fact that despite being an alcoholic drink, it provides plenty of benefits. For example, the red and white wines are helpful as preventives against diseases like cancer.

Portugal is well known world wide for its wines and vineyards and a large proportion of the wines produced are exported in different parts of the world. In the country, the most popular wine variety is the Porto wine or Port wine produced in the Douro region and it is the variety which is exported in maximum proportions. Following it closely are the Vinho Verde wines which are the second largest wine variety exported from Portugal. Vinhos Verdes wine cultivation had started since classical times but it was only in 1908 that the regions producing Vinhos Verdes were recognized and included as part of the Demarcated Wine Regions. It is in the northern fringes of the country that these wines are obtained mainly from the regions of Minho and Douro Literal towards the North West. These are mostly places of historical interest in Portugal. The Vinho Verde wines are produced from white and red castas which remain low in sugar content and therefore does not require exposure to the maturing or aging processes. Moreover, these wines are suitably influenced by their favorable climatic conditions like high humidity and oceanic climate type characteristics which add to its distinct flavor. Before serving however, it necessarily requires low temperatures. The Vinho Verde is also very well known for its capacity to facilitate digestion.
