Meursault Perrieres Wine
Perrieres is a Premier Cru rated climat of the Meursault appellation in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. It is one of Meursault’s larger and better-known vineyard sites, and is located at the southern end of the commune. The site is divided into two similarly named halves; Perrieres Dessus and Perrieres Dessous, dessus meaning above, and dessous meaning below. The Aux Perrieres lieu-dit is also partially covered by the Perrieres climat. To add to the complexity of these sites and their classifications, the Clos des Perrieres, a walled enclave within Perrieres Dessous, has its own independent climat.
Perrieres is located on the limestone slopes of the Cote d’Or, facing between south and south-east, thus capitalizing on the ripening potential of the morning and early afternoon sunshine during the growing season. It sits in a small cluster of Premier Cru vineyards at the southern end of Meursault, close to the Puligny-Montrachet commune boundary. These vineyards produce the commune’s finest wines, renowned for being among the richer, more full-bodied Burgundy whites.
On the slopes immediately below Perrieres are the Charmes and Genevrieres climats, and together these three large sites produce the majority of Meursault’s Premier Cru white wines; most red wines produced in Meursault are made under the Blagny or Volnay appellations.
Meursault Premier Cru wines are those produced under the strictest conditions of the Meursault appellation, from grapes grown within officially classified Premier Cru vineyards. These wines are permitted to state the words Premier Cru on their labels and to append their official climat name to that of the commune in the appellation title.
The term perriere is common in the region’s vineyard names, and is a reference to the stones (pierres in French) which characterize the soils in those sites. Burgundy’s Perriere vineyards include: Fixin La Perriere, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Perrieres, Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Perrieres, Corton Les Perrieres, Beaune Les Perrieres, Meursault Perrieres, Puligny-Montrachet Les Perrieres, Saint-Aubin Les Perrieres and Montagny Les Perrieres.
