Agriculture damage in Candaba alarming
March 29, 2011
CANDABA — Agricultural crop damages involving thousands of hectares here have reached an alarming stage, with most farmers incurring close to a million pesos in losses due to fungus and rust on their crops.
Jojo Paguinto, president of Pansinao Corn Growers Cooperative, said the earnings of corn growers have decreased by 50 percent.
He said they could no longer finance another planting season if their problems are not addressed by government agencies and officials.
The farmers attributed fungus and rust on corns on climate change.
Edgar Paguinto, also a planter here, believes that the problem was brought about by abnormal changes in the condition of the environment.
It was learned that corn grown in soil that is high in nitrogen is most susceptible to corn smut, which develops during hot, humid weather. Corn smut or ustilago maydis is the most common fungal disease of sweet corn.
Meanwhile, rust on sweet corn, caused by the fungus puccinia sorghi, is spread by red, wind-borne spores. It appears when temperature is 60 to 70 degrees and relative humidity is 98 to 100 percent. It causes raised, brick-red spots on the tops of leaves.
Affected planters are from the villages of Sto. Rosario, Bambang, Gulap, Lanang, and Pansinao, with some 20,000 hectares of land involved.
As this developed, the planters are requesting officials from the Regional Office of the Department of Agriculture to visit the fungus-infected corns in various places here to determine what causes the problem.
“I hope they can visit us here for them to see the real situation, and so we can address the problem,” Paguinto said.
He also asked for possible assistance that various department may extend.
