Aids pour in to landslide victims

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has released financial aids to victims of a landslide in Valencia City, Bukidnon, on Monday.
Araceli F. Solamillo, DSWD-Northern Mindanao director, said in a media forum on Friday that the government has allotted P125.143 million worth of family packs that consist of three kilos rice, canned good, noodles and clothing to 276 households in at least three barangays that were directly affected by the landslide.
Solamillo said financial assistance amounting to P5,000 and burial assistance were given to the families of the five victims who died during the incident.
She added that even the three houses affected by the landslide and the six injured persons were also given P5,000 each, the funds of which come from Malacañang.
Solamillo said she had deployed a social worker to assist the victims and identify their needs.
Solamillo said the DSWD is now prepared to face other disasters that may hit the region as they already had a ready supply of 2,000 family packs and standby funds.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) gave P55,000 to the beneficiaries of the five victims who died and one who was injured in the landslide.
Undersecretary Benito T. Ramos, NDRRMC director, said a financial assistance of P10,000 each was also given to the families of the victims who died and P5,000 to the injured.
Ramos personally went to the area on Wednesday with Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Northern Mindanao Regional Director Carmelito A. Lupo and met with Bukidnon Governor Alex Calingasan and Mayors Leandro Jose Catarata of Valencia City and Laurencia Edma of San Fernando town.
The beneficiaries who received P10,000 each included relatives of the three who perished in Sitio Hangaron, Lumbayao, Valencia City, namely: Sherryl Arnusa Sadsad, Marites Lagunay Sereño and Segundina Lagunay; and two from Barangay Tongantongan, namely: Joy L. Cullamar and Roque Santillan.
Lupo, who chairs the regional DRRMC in Northern Mindanao, said only one person (not four as earlier reported) identified as, Renante Sadsad, the husband of Sherryl Sadsad, was injured in the incident.
As of 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Catarata officially announced the termination of retrieval operations in the landslide site in Lumbayao, Valencia City so that the Department of Public Works and Highways could start stabilizing the slopes of the area.
Emergency workers and rescuers said they found nothing except the human organs last July 5, as one of the retrieved bodies of the casualties was cut in half.
