Airport installs system to avoid bird strike
April 9, 2011
A BIRD audio system (BAS) was recently installed at the Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZR) Airport to avoid occurrence of bird strike.
While the BAS was installed last January, it is still on testing period, which will last until the end of the year, Alfredo Destura, area information officer of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap), said.
“We are still in the process of determining the accuracy of the BAS in so far as the sounds of birds it produces with that of the species of the birds that are seen at the airport’s landing area,” Destura said.
Mars Macanda of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Eastern Visayas said they have furnished the Caap of the list of bird species that are often seen at the DZR Airport.
Among these are the egrets, herons, wild ducks, water birds (water fowls) and even parrots.
He reminded the airport officials that the BAS was only designed to
“scare away the birds and not to kill them.”
“Otherwise, it could violate our wildlife conservation law,” he said, referring to Republic Act 9147.
The P3-million equipment produces at least eight kinds of bird sounds.
Destura said the installation of the BAS at the DZR was meant to repel the presence of the birds at the landing area which poses danger to the safety of the airplanes.
In 2010, three instances of bird strikes were reported at the DZR Airport, which resulted to the paralysis of the operations of the affected airplanes.
“A single bird accidentally going inside the engine of a plane, for example, could damage it and in the process it would be grounded. The Caap will not allow the plane to leave for security reason of the passengers,” Destura said.
Destura said the BAS will be operated 15 minutes before a plane would land and 15 minutes before it takes off.
Prior to the installation of the BAS at the airport, the Caap has designated two security personnel to turn away birds found at the landing area.
The DZR Airport, the largest airport in the region, has 12-daily flights servicing the Manila and Cebu routes. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
