Aquino admits meeting ex-fugitive senator

April 1, 2011

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III admitted Thursday that he met with Senator Panfilo Lacson, who recently emerged after 14 months in hiding.
“I did have an occasion to talk to him. He visited me in my office,” Aquino said in an interview after gracing the load-out ceremony of the AG&P Heavy Fabrication Yard in Bauan, Batangas.
He said their conversation basically centered on “touching base,” informing the senator about what he missed in more than a year that he was out of the country.
“I asked him what his plans in Senate now that he’s back,” he said, adding the meeting took place last Tuesday.
Aquino said he brought up the priority development assistance fund (PDAF), which Lacson refused to avail.
“I asked him about the PDAF. I told him that management of pork barrel is better now and if he is interested with the entitlements. He said he will maintain his stand not to accept it,” the President said.
Lacson has called for an abolition of pork barrel system, noting that it “had corrupted legislators.”
“(Even the Department of Justice) complained that their personnel are severely lacking…Our focus now is violent crimes including drugs,” he said.
But at the same time, he said he will let Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to continue with the investigation.
Lacson surfaced last Saturday after hiding for months due to his involvement in the double murder case of publicist Bubby Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito.
During his first press briefing, the senator lamented that he did not feel as an ally of the Aquino administration when he was in hiding.
Aquino’s spokesperson Ricky Carandang said he sees no reason why the “close friendship” of Aquino and Lacson has to change due to the issues hounding the former fugitive senator. (Sunnex)
