Archdiocese to mark 1st bishop’s death anniversary

March 25, 2011

ANGELES CITY — The Archdiocese of San Fernando will mark the 50th death anniversary of Most Rev. Cesar Ma. Guerrero, D.D., first bishop of Pampanga, on Sunday, March 27 at the Carmelite Monastery here.
Auxiliary Bishop Roberto Mallari, D.D., will officiate the Mass, which starts at 10 a.m. to be followed by a memorial blessing and wreath-laying ceremonies at Bishop Guerrero’s gravesite, also at the Carmelite Monastery.
Lord Francis Musni, history consultant of the Holy Angel University Center for Kapampangan Studies, said Bishop Guerrero was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of San Fernando after it was separated from the Archdiocese of Manila on December 11, 1948, and was formally installed on September 8, 1949.
At the time of its creation, the Diocese of San Fernando covered not just Pampanga but also Bataan, Zambales, a part of Tarlac and Nueva Ecija, with 88 parishes administered by 108 secular and 20 regular (religious) clergy members.
Bishop Guerrero was born January 26, 1885 in Ermita, Manila to parents Don Leon Ma. Guerrero, a noted botanist and nationalist, and Aurora Dominguez. He was ordained in 1914 in Rome, where he also finished his doctorate in sacred theology and canon law at the Gregorian University.
Bishop Guerrero served as secretary to Manila Archbishop Michael O’Doherty and first bishop of the new Diocese of Lingayen in Pangasinan in 1929. There he founded the Mary Help of Christians Seminary and revitalized the local clergy.
He was recalled to Manila to become the Archdiocese’s first Auxiliary Bishop. The war years that followed caused him agony and tainted his reputation, said Musni. Accused of collaborating with the Japanese, he was charged with treason before the People’s Court after the war, but his case was immediately dismissed.
“All Kapampangans should remember and honor Bishop Guerrero who was not a Kapampangan but did so much for the spiritual well-being of our province mates,” Musni said.
Bishop Guerrero founded the Mater Boni Consilii (now Mother of Good Counsel) Seminary in 1950; the town-to-town Cruzada de Caridad y Penitencia (or devotion to the Virgen de los Remedios) in 1952; and the Carmelite Monastery in Angeles in 1956, where he retired following his resignation in 1957 due to poor health.
He died March 27, 1961 and was buried beside the monastery chapel, according to his wishes. He was 76.
