Arroyo doctors appear in Pasay court

MANILA (Updated 9:02 a.m.) — Doctors of former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Arroyo appears in Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) for a hearing on the electoral sabotage case against the lawmaker Friday.
Arroyo’s main attending physician Dr. Juliet Gopez-Cervantez, endocrinologist Dr. Roberto Mirasol, and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mario Ver arrived at the Pasay City RTC past 8:30 a.m.
The doctors are set to settle doubts on the medical condition of Arroyo, who has been diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism and bone mineral disorder after undergoing three cervical spine surgeries in October at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City.
The latest medical condition showed that Arroyo’s health condition is improving.
Clerk of Court Joel Pelicano earlier said the court decided to summon the doctors after the Commission on Elections (Comelec), which filed the case against Arroyo last week, filed a motion seeking explanation from her doctors on her current health condition.
The court would determine if the continued hospital arrest of the former President is necessary.
“There is urgency in this because both camps (prosecution and defense) want to hear from her attending doctors. In this case, the prosecution wants to know, as their motion said, her real medical condition, while the defense want to continue her hospital arrest,” Pelicano said.
Even before the court granting her temporary hospital arrest, the 64-year-old Arroyo has been staying at St. Luke’s Medical Center since November 15 after she and her husband, Jose Miguel, were prevented by immigration authorities from leaving the country ostensibly to seek medical treatment abroad.
The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) on Thursday expressed support to the motions of the government to have doctors of Arroyo explain her real medical condition.
Dr. Leo Olarte, PMA Board of Governor member, said the group agrees with the call of the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) and the Comelec to get the actual state of health of Arroyo not from her lawyers and spokespersons.
In its motion, the OSG said the doctors’ testimony could be useful to address a “lingering question” as to Arroyo’s medical and physical condition and to help the two courts in resolving issues such as her need to travel abroad and on whether there is a real need for her to be under hospital arrest while facing an electoral sabotage case.
Meanwhile, the Senate Blue Ribbon committee also said it would summon the doctors next week in its inquiry on the alleged cheating in the 2004 presidential elections and the 2007 mid-term elections. (Sunnex)
