Arroyo graces opening of new 22-km route to Pinatubo crater
April 5, 2011
PORAC, Pampanga — Former President and now Pampanga Second District Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo led government officials and members of the Pinatubo Memorial Executive Committee (PMEC) at the opening of a new 22-kilometer route to the Mt. Pinatubo crater.
The route will become an alternative way to the famous mountain where campers and hikers need to cross Capas town in Tarlac.
Arroyo was accompanied by his close ally, Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda, and 56 other participants from the local government of Pampanga and the business sector.
The formal opening of the route, which spans across three barangays in this town, is set on June 15 during the observance of the 20th anniversary of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.
Pineda described the route to the Mt. Pinatubo crater as a road to alternative livelihood-ecotourism for local folk as it is expected to generate job opportunities even for Aeta families.
“The route is an easier way to reach the magnificent Mt. Pinatubo Crater Lake,” Pineda said.
Other officers who joined the group were Porac Mayor Condralito dela Cruz and Vice Mayor Dexter David, and Pampanga Board Members Fritzie David Dizon and Nestor Tolentino.
The Pampanga Provincial Government has laid plans to transform the way to Mt. Pinatubo into an eco-tourism center in Central Luzon to attract foreign and local trekkers.
Recently, the Pampanga Provincial Board unanimously approved Resolution No. 1810 making June 15 to 21 Mt. Pinatubo Eruption Commemoration Week.
The observance of Mt. Pinatubo Week will start this year and observed every year thereafter.
Four local government units in the province have also conducted rehabilitation plans on flood and watershed management and land use caused by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.
These are the towns of Bacolor, Floridablanca, Guagua, and the City of San Fernando.
After the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption, a crater lake was formed in the said mountain. Abundant rainfall increased its depth by about one meter per month. This led to the creation of a natural lake at the crater of the volcano. (With a report by Franco G. Regala)
