Arroyo: I don’t miss perks

LUBAO — Former President and now second district Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said she does not miss any of the perks she had during her nine-year stint as the country’s Chief Executive.
Arroyo, in her speech before well-wishers during her 64th birthday celebration at the San Agustin Parish Church here, said she is in fact enjoying a “much private government life” as congressman.
She also said that she does not miss the usual privileges accorded to the President of the Republic.
Arroyo ran for congressman after her stint as President, a much criticized move by her observers both in politics and the civil society.
“I do not miss the perks of the presidency. Like I do not mind getting caught in traffic and paying toll at the expressway,” she said, adding her health has reaped the benefits of a less exposed private life.
She said she has now time to relax and attend social gatherings.
The former President said she has now time to attend simple beauty regimen, barangay programs and events and take a break from the political events on the weekend.
Arroyo said her first birthday as congresswoman is much meaningful with the expression of love being showered her by Kapampangans.
The former President also celebrated her natal day with her constituents, former Cabinet members and government appointees of her previous administration. The concelebrated mass was also attended by 500 local supporters from different barangays of her district.
Support from Kapampangans
Governor Lilia Pineda led Pampanga officials in honoring Arroyo with flowers and song numbers.
Pineda said Arroyo has the support of Kapampangans in her political endeavors and are proud to have her still in provincial politics.
“We wish her the best of health and we hope that she continue in promoting the welfare of Kapampangans through her various projects,” Pineda said.
Asked about the many issues still hurled against the former President, Pineda said that she is confident Arroyo would able to handle such issues.
The governor, along with the former President’s husband Jose Miguel Arroyo and children Juan Miguel Arroyo and Diosdado Arroyo, offered flowers to the birthday celebrator.
Board Members Trina Dizon, Monina Laus, Fritzie David-Dizon and Representatives Catalina Bagasina and Carmelo Lazatin were among the guests during the celebration.
Protest vs Gloria
While the celebration is ongoing Tuesday, protesters gathered in Katipunan, Quezon City to condemn Arroyo’s alleged anomalies during her administration.
Protesters led by Oust Merceditas Gutierrez (OMG) group have placed orange and peach ribbons and balloons at center islands and trees to show their support on the impeachment of Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, an appointee of Arroyo.
The group said orange represents their support to detain Arroyo for her alleged anomalies during the last administration when she was the President. Peach, they added, means impeachment for the Ombudsman.
The group also had banners with “GMA loves Merci.” Protesters believed after Gutierrez’s impeachment, Arroyo will next to be prosecuted.
In an interview with Sun.Star Pampanga, former first gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo came to her wife’s defense, saying the accusations of her detractors are “baseless” and are mere political noise.
Representative Arroyo also wished for the continuous economic prosperity of the country and the further increase of a robust middle class. She also wishes for stability in government institutions and renewed economic reforms.
