Barbaresco is a full-bodied dry red wine made from 100% Nebbiolo sub-varieties: Michet, Lampia and Rosè. The wine has a very light-red color which turns orange when it ages. This description almost exactly matches the one for a Barolo wine. Because of this as well as that both wines are made in areas almost connected to each other, the wines are often compared to each other.

The main difference between the two is that Barbaresco is a bit more elegant and soft than the often strong and powerful Barolo. The cause of this difference can be found in the soil and the slightly different climate which allows for the Nebbiolo grapes to ripen just a bit faster which in turn lessens the tannins the grape skin releases. This however does not mean that there aren’t any strong muscle Barbaresco’s out there, some wineries do have vineyards that are better suited to deliver stronger Barbaresco wines.

Flavors that can be detected are violets, wild roses, raspberries, vanilla, cinnamon and green peppercorns.

Barbaresco has the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) status, the highest in Italy.
