Bird hunters nabbed

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

CANDABA — The local police have arrested two suspected poachers hunting migratory birds and other protected species.

Police Superintendent Wilson Santos, town police chief, identified the suspects as Danilo Suba Castro, 65, and Orlando Cunanan Salas, 43, both residents of Barangay San Roque, San Luis town.

Santos said that more than 30 birds such as Crakes, Swamphens, and Bushens (Uwis/Tikling), and one bird cage were recovered from the suspects.

The police conducted an operation implementing the environmental protection law particularly the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act in coordination with the Community Environment and Natural Office at the vicinity of Doña Simang, Barangay Vizal San Pablo, this town, where migratory birds and other bird species are commonly found. This, according to Santos, led to the arrest of the suspects.

Prior to the operation, a witness who requested not to be named, who was then at the vicinity of the said bird sanctuary, saw a group of men catching birds using a net.

The witness immediately informed the police of the bird hunting. A special team led by SPO1 Gilbert Magat was dispatched to apprehend the suspects but when the poachers saw the police, they immediately fled on board a motorcycle together with their catch.

The police operatives gave chase, but to no avail. But on December 6, police received information that a group of men was selling birds in the town of San Luis.

In response, an intelligence team went to verify the report. After confirming it, the team immediately swooped down on the houses of Suba and Cunanan and found the birds placed in a cage.

The suspects failed to justify why they have in their possession the said birds, which the police subsequently confiscated. They were brought to the Candaba Police Station for further questioning.

Violation of the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act will be filed against the suspects. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
