Bishop: RH Bill biggest challenge to church

March 30, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Auxiliary Bishop Pablo Virgilio David disclosed that the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill has become the biggest challenge to the Catholic Church and families opposing the proposed “anti-life” legislation.
The prelate was among hundreds of Pampanga Clergy, led by Archbishop Paciano Aniceto, Auxiliary Bishop Roberto Mallari and Zambales Bishop Florentino Lavarias, who spearheaded a pro-life prayer rally attended by some 5,000 faithful and “pro-lifers” from Central Luzon on a warm Sunday afternoon at Villa Del Sol.
“Malaking challenge para sa church ngayon to explain why our side is against the RH Bill. There is a need to elaborate on the stand of the church. The stand of the church is not just the stand of the bishops. The church is more than just the bishops and the priests,” David told Sun.Star Pampanga.
He narrated that before the church’s RH Bill social teaching, massive consultations were conducted among the church where the biggest members come from the laity.
“It was them who posed the other challenge: Why would we compromise the health of our children?” said David.
More than morality, politics
Bishop David revealed that more than the issue of morality on the RH Bill, politics is behind the “push” to have it passed.
“Hindi namin makita kung bakit ginagawa nilang agenda iyung population control. That is outdated now. Our population should be seen now as the biggest resource of this country. We do not need to look at a big population as just consumers but a productive human resource. Right now these politicians are blaming us saying the blood is in our hands now for the death of 11 women a day daw. Bakit kami ang at fault doon? Bakit hindi nila ayusin ang health care system? Why would the government spend more money for contraceptives and condoms than for basic medicines, healthcare and hospitals?” said David.
He added that the government instead should make the population more productive with proper employment. “Are they forgetting that what is saving our country now is the population? We could have been bankrupt a long time ago if not for OFWs who are actually the excess population. Because they could be employed here, they went abroad but economically, they are the ones supporting our country and we are indebted to them.”
Stop the ‘insults’
“Please do not insult parents. Like my parents gave birth to 13 children but all of them are productive citizens of this country and not one of them is a liability. So don’t they dare say they were irresponsible. I think we should question the logic of these pro-RH bill advocates,” he stressed.
The prelate revealed that many of his activist friends, who are anti-imperialist, are now taking the RH Bill issue “hook, line and sinker.”
“The prescription for development from the first world countries has failed and now they are experimenting on us third world countries. Tayo lang mahihirap ang kinakaya-kaya nila, eh. It seems their line of thinking is to reduce poverty by reducing the poor. That is insulting. You reduce poverty by empowering the poor, employing them, educating them and giving them a chance,” he said.
Address the issue
David noted that government should address the root cause of poverty rather than push for the passage of the bill.
“Our problem is not overpopulation but the over concentration of population in urban centers much that agriculture has been neglected. Both the urban and rural poor are suffering because they are not attended to economically. The government should make people productive and address the root cause of poverty instead of pushing this anti-life bill,” David concluded.
