Calamity in SF City, 4 towns

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–This city and four other towns have been declared under state of calamity yesterday as rains continued to batter Pampanga for the fourth straight day.

City officials put the capital city under the state of calamity after 15 of its barangays have been affected by floodwater as of 2 p.m. yesterday.
Later in the day, respective local officials of the towns of Guagua, Macabebe, Masantol and Minalin, followed suit, authorizing the release of their towns’ calamity funds to mitigate the effects of floods in their areas.

Some 70 families have been evacuated to five schools in the component city due to flash floods, as the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) has activated the emergency operations center (EOC) at the Heroes Hall here.

During the emergency meeting presided by City Mayor Edwin D. Santiago, the CDRRMC recommended the declaration of a “state of calamity” in the city.
As of press time, the 70 families have temporarily been evacuated at the Heroes Hall and later transferred to five evacuation centers located at Barangays Calulut, Saguin, Panipuan, Baliti and Telabastagan.

Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Director Josefina Timoteo also joined the meeting and suggested that isolated areas should be prioritized.

“I know that San Fernando is a self-reliant city but the RDRRMC is very much willing to assist in any way we can,” Timoteo added.
Also present during the meeting were Vice Mayor Jimmy Lazatin, Councilors Angie Hizon, Noel Tulabut, BJ Lagman and Lito Ocampo.

The Heroes Hall located at Barangay San Juan is the staging area for evacuees and the EOC is continuously monitoring flooding, traffic and water levels in major dikes and creeks.

Typhoon Maring has left 14 other towns in the province inundated in floodwater as of 11:30 a.m. yesterday.
Reports from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) office confirmed that the towns of Floridablanca, Lubao, Guagua, Sta.Rita, Sasmuan, Bacolor, Apalit, Candaba, Macabebe, Masantol, Minalin, San Simon and Sto. Tomas are flooded due to heavy rains since Saturday.

Minalin Mayor Edgar Flores ordered the evacuation of residents in his town due to the overflow of water at the Sta. Rita section of the Minalin tail dike.

In Porac town, a three-meter landslide occurred in Barangay Babo Sacan which damaged the bridge at Barangay Sapang Uwak.
The provincial government, led by Vice Governor Dennis Pineda, is continuously monitoring flooded towns as the official reactivated his rescue teams and equipment to flooded towns.

In Angeles City, a dike in Barangay Cuayan collapsed during the onslaught of typhoon “Maring” yesterday.
At least 40 to 50 meters of sheet piles of the Taug Dike collapsed prompting sand bagging activities and heavy equipment operations by the City Engineering Office and Barangay Cuayan’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Temporary repairs to the damaged part of the dike were undertaken to avoid overflow of water.
Around 2 p.m. Tuesday, about 40 families from villages of Sapang Bato, Anunas, Amsic, Malabanias, Ninoy Aquino and Pandan, also in Angeles City, were evacuated.

The Angeles City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said evacuation was enforced in said villages to preempt any untoward incidents caused by erosion along the slope of the Abacan River.

A total of eight houses in villages of Amsic and Malabanias were completely washed out due to torrential rains.
Meanwhile, Robinsons Mall launched its drive for in kind donations to be distributed to flooded residents in the province.

Robinsons Mall Customer Service are now accepting donations like food, water, clothing and other necessities which may be dropped at their information booths.
