Church urges faithful to join Lenten events

April 20, 2011
LENTEN activities allow Catholics to experience the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ so they should attend daily readings, masses and processions during the period.
“The key is sacrifice, sacrament and presence. In these three is the key that binds the Paschal Tri-duum,” Msgr. Cristobal Garcia, Archdiocesan Commission on Worship chairman told Sun.Star Cebu.

Catholics observe Lent, which starts with Ash Wednesday, and culminates with the three-day Paschal Triduum.
Vigil
The Paschal Triduum begins with the mass of the Lord’s Supper on Maundy Thursday up to the Easter vigil on Saturday evening.
After the mass, the Eucharistic vigil will be held, during which a consecrated host is transferred to a side altar of the church.
After the vigil, Catholics hold the Visita Iglesia, which involves visiting 14 churches that symbolize the 14 Stations of the cross.
On Good Friday, the Siete Palabras, or Jesus’s seven last words before he died on the cross, will be held at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral led by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma. Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal will give the introduction.
Procession
The Veneration of the Holy Cross and the Santo Entierro procession are held after the three-hour-long meditation.
On Saturday evening, churches will have the Easter vigil mass or the blessing of fire
and water. Usually, a parish conducts adult baptism, if a candidate is deemed ready to
embrace the Catholic faith.
The Sugat or meeting of Jesus and his mother after resurrection is held on Sunday dawn, which is followed by the Easter Mass and recitation of the Te Deum.
Last Sunday, hundreds of churchgoers witnessed the celebration of Passion Sunday, more commonly known as Palm Sunday, held at the grounds of Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe yesterday.
During Palm Sunday, parishioners bring crucifixes made of palm leaves to church to be blessed by the priest. The blessed palm leaves are later placed at altars and doors of houses, on the belief they help protect the household from harm.
The blessing of the palm leaves is followed by a procession and a play, which is a reenactment of Jesus Christ’s entrance to Jerusalem.
Play
A total of 120 participants from Guadalupe and Pardo, Cebu City, and Argao town took part in the activity, organized by the Guadalupe Parish and the Parish Youth Coordinating Council-Guadalupe.
Play participants practiced for two months to perfect their roles.
“Naa may mga tao nga dili ganahan musimba pero ganahan mutan-aw (Some people do not want to hear mass but like to watch plays). This play is one way of carrying messages from the Bible. All of the emotions are patterned according to the gospel,” said radio dySS Super Radyo personality Aljin Abaquita, director of the play.
Spiritual director Fr. Arven Pretila said the play is a fund-raising project of Msgr. Jose Montecillo, parish priest of the Our Lady of Guadalupe church.
The proceeds will be used to construct a parish convent, which is estimated to cost P17 million.
Bantayan
A continuation of the reenactment will be held this Sunday, in line with the celebration of the Grand Sugat sa Guadalupe, which will also be celebrated with a musical extravaganza by PYCC Divas at midnight on April 23.
As many people are expected to go to Bantayan Island to witness Holy Week activities there, the Cebu Provincial Police Office will beef up the police force in the area.
Starting today, 250 to 300 police personnel will be deployed in the Bantayan Island towns of Madridejos, Bantayan and Sta. Fe.
Senior Supt. Patrocinio Comendador, CPPO officer-in-charge, said over radio DyHP that the police personnel will also monitor major seaports, transport terminals, churches and other areas during Holy Week.
He said members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams will be tapped to augment the police.
Comendador met with the some town police chiefs yesterday to polish their security plans. He said the Sugat celebration in Ming-lanilla will be watched closely.
He said the police will also implement a provincial ordinance that bans bikini shows during Holy Week. (Cebu Normal University Intern Emerald Lace Reynes)
