Civic group to hold free eye surgery mission

BACOLOR — The Kapampangan Development Foundation (KDF) will hold a surgical mission for indigent patients with pterygium problems at the Jose A. Datu Medical Center (JADMC) on April 30 to May 1.
Sylvia Ordonez, KDF trustee, said the mission is in response to the growing number of indigents with pterygium problems.
Pterygium (Surfer’s Eye) most often refers to a benign growth of the conjunctiva. A pterygium commonly grows from the nasal side of the sclera.
It is associated with, and thought to be caused by ultraviolet-light exposure (e.g., sunlight), low humidity, and dust.
The mission is targeting 200 patients and will be the biggest of the recent pterygium operations conducted by KDF, in cooperation with a dozen of its service partners.
Last year, KDF — in cooperation with Clark Development Corp. (CDC), Central Luzon Society of Ophthalmologists (CELSO), Rotary Clubs of Pampanga, Jose B. Lingad Regional Memorial Hospital, Ospital Ning Angeles (ONA), and Social Action Center of Pampanga (SACOP) — was able to service 468 cataract and 78 pterygium patients all over Pampanga.
