Clearing of Aeta ancestral lands in Floridablanca set

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Tribal leaders of Aeta communities in Barangay Nabuklod, Floridablanca met with Provincial Board member Nestor Tolentino here Tuesday in relation to an agreement seeking to develop 1,000 hectares of ancestral lands.
Tolentino, focal person for the said project, told Sun.Star Pampanga that the move is part of the ongoing implementation of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) that states that the province will spearhead the planting of fruit-bearing trees, banana and vegetables, including other crops within the ancestral domain in the villages of Nabuklod (300 hectares), Camachile (400 hectares) and Mawacat (300 hectares).
“We are now on the stage wherein we are urging our Aeta families to start the clearing of the lands and weed out grass and other obstacles to pave the way for the proper surveying of the land that will be included in the MOA,” Tolentino said, stressing that Aeta families here will be able to avail of a one-hectare development assistance from the Pampanga Provincial Government for the planting of high-value crops.
Tolentino said a nursery and demo-site should be set in place immediately to be able to provide adequate seedlings and development facilities for the project. Roger Apang and Roy Bacani of Barangay Nabuklod agreed with Tolentino’s statement, adding that enough lands in the area will be made available for the demo-site.
Aside from planting various crops, the MOA also seeks to ensure the construction and rehabilitation of roads, buildings, water sources and other necessary infrastructure for the proper implementation of the project.
The MOA further includes medical and financial assistance for the Aetas. During the project implementation, the Province will conduct regular monitoring and inspection, including the selection of workers, which will ensure that Aetas are prioritized.
