Company launches ‘green’ program for customers
February 11, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Laus Group of Companies (LGC) on Wednesday launched a green initiative program to instill environmental consciousness among new car owners and to bring back endemic tree varieties in urban areas here.
LGC president Levy P. Laus led the formal launching of the A Native Tree for Every Car program here with the theme “Driving Towards a Greener Earth” at the CarWorld showroom, which was attended by partners and leaders from the Hortica Filipina Foundation and the San Beda Alumni Foundation.
Laus said the event, aimed at promoting environmental consciousness among car owners, serves as the LGC’s environmental advocacy in its bid to help offset carbon emissions released by cars into the atmosphere.
The program gives trees that will be planted by new car owners in their backyards or in designated areas that need trees.
According to Laus, the program is an opportunity to make every car owner’s family appreciate the experience of buying a new car. “To give more significance to that important event in buying a new car, we also would like to teach our customers that they also have a responsibility towards the environment,” Laus said, stressing that a family’s experience in buying a new car becomes even more meaningful with the new program.
The program is in partnership with Hortica Filipina, which provides the tree saplings of endemic and indigenous Philippine trees. Hortica Filipina is a non-profit, non-sectarian, environmental, non-government organization, which aims to promote the culture of gardening and plant care in the Philippines and the use of Philippine native tree and plant species in gardening, landscaping and horticulture in the country.
Hortica Filipina president Imelda Sarmiento said their group is partnering with the LGC in bringing tree biodiversity in the urban areas of Pampanga. Sarmiento told Sun.Star Pampanga that the partnership will see to the return of endemic tree varieties that have been almost completely removed from the urban areas and replaced by trees imported from other countries.
Currently, the group has an existing partnership with the pioneering agreement for thousands of native tree species to be planted along the North Luzon Expressway via the Red Lions Living Highways Project.
Laus, for his part, said he will also be urging other business companies here to take the lead of LGC in promoting environmental awareness and planting native Philippine trees.
Laus said that LGC will be implementing the program in all its fleet of car dealerships starting this month.
It could be noted that it takes some seven mature trees to offset the carbon emission of every car put on the road, but Laus said that the program presents the beginning of more tree propagation programs under LGC and the propagation of more trees in urban centers here. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
