Cory Aquino statue in Clark pushed

December 22, 2010

CLARK FREEPORT – Officers of the Clark Development Corporation (CDC) have urged the influential Metro Clark Advisory Council (MCAC) to place a memorial statue of the late President Corazon “Cory” Aquino inside the Clark Freeport.

In a letter to MCAC, CDC co-chair Marino Morales and CDC Public Relations manager Angelo Lopez proposed the construction and installation of a monument within the Clark Freeport Zone that will serve as a tribute to the late President.

Lopez, who is one of Pampanga’s veteran broadcasters, said it was the late President Aquino who spearheaded all reconstruction works and the rehabilitation of affected areas in the aftermath of the Pinatubo eruption, particularly the province of Pampanga.

Prior to the creation of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), the agency tasked to oversee the utilization of former United States military bases in the country, Aquino had set up a council that created plans for alternative uses of military camps and bases.

“She (Aquino) set up the Joint Legislative-Executive Bases Council (JLEBC) that drew up plans for alternative uses of military camps and bases,” said Lopez, who then represented Pampanga first district Rep. Carmelo Lazatin in the JLEBC in the early 1990s.

He added that the recommendations of the JLEBC, then chaired by former UP Diliman president Jose V. Abueva, paved the way for the enactment of Republic Act 7227, or The Bases Conversion and Development Act of 1992.

Lopez also stressed that even prior to former President Fidel V. Ramos’s proposal to make the Clark airport the centerpiece of the Freeport, it was Aquino who wanted what is now the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport to serve as the catalyst that would “eventually spur economic growth in the province and the entire region.”

The veteran broadcaster also said the CDC-PRD has yet to announce where the statue will be placed pending comments from Morales and the entire MCAC.

“To be erected in an area that is accessible to stakeholders and visitors alike, the monument will preserve the legacy of the much-adored late President,” Lopez said.

He added that the statue will also serve as a reminder of the province’s previous struggles, and the subsequent triumphs whose benefits the people now enjoy. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
