About Wines from Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy of France
Best wine supplier in Philippines discusses wine related topics
Criots-Batard-Montrachet is a small Grand Cru vineyard site, or climat, in the Cote de Beaune in Burgundy. As is the case with all Grand Crus in Burgundy, the site has its own specific appellation, created in 1939, and entirely distinct from the communal appellation of Chassagne-Montrachet, the village in which Criots-Batard-Montrachet is located.
Criots-Batard-Montrachet wines are dry white wines made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes grown within the carefully demarcated limits of the Criots-Batard-Montrachet site. They are among the most highly regarded wines in the world, a fact exaggerated by their scarcity. With only 4 acres (1.6 hectares) of vines to draw on, Criots-Batard-Montrachet is one of the smallest appellations in France, and produces only a small quantity of its rare wine every vintage.
The south-east facing Criots-Batard Montrachet site is located at the foot of the Cote d’Or slopes, at an altitude of around 780ft (240m) – slightly lower than its neighbors Chevalier-Montrachet, and Le Montrachet. Consequently, the brown limestone soils here are slightly deeper than further up the slopes, and have a higher proportion of clay. These subtle differences, when combined with specific vineyard mesoclimates and orientation are the essential components of terroir – a concept which is of the utmost importance to Burgundy’s winemaking community.
