Description of Gewurztraminer Grapes
The Gewurztraminer grape evolved from the Traminer varieties that are grown throughout Eastern and Western Europe. While Traminer grapes are pale and mild in flavor, Gewurztraminer grapes are distinctly spicy. “Gewurztraminer” sounds German, but it was coined in the tiny Alsace region of France that borders Germany and Switzerland. Because of the high sugar content of the Gewurztraminer grape, Gewurztraminer wine has a relatively high alcoholic content, and sweeter bottles can be served as dessert wines.
Geography
Gewurztraminer grapes initially were grown in Italy, but they soon spread to Germany and France. Gewurztraminer grapes now are grown primarily in the Alsace region of France and in Austria and Germany. In recent years, Americans have begun growing Gewurztraminer grapes in California and the Pacific Northwest.
Time Frame
Gewurztraminer grapes are grown in cooler climates, and the grape flowers begin to bloom in early spring, making Gewurztraminer grapes difficult to manage. A combination of frost during budding and small grape yields make for a challenging harvest of Gewurztraminer grapes.
Characteristics
Gewurztraminer grapes are dark pink with tough skins, and each grape varies slightly in color. The wine they produce is always white, but the color can vary from very pale to a rich golden yellow. The tasting notes often are described as floral or perfumed.
Origin of “Gewurztraminer”
The prefix “gewurz” is a reference to the taste of Gewurztraminer. “Gewurz” is roughly translated from German, with some believing it means that the wine is spicy and others saying it means perfumed. Regardless, there is no debating that Gewurztraminer is a strong-tasting wine.
Food Pairings
Gewurztraminer wine pairs well with several foods, including cheese. For example, Munster goes very well with herbaceous Gewurztraminer, particularly when served as dessert. Goose is also known to be a good pairing with Gewurztraminer.
