Detainees’ livelihood program mulled
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – An official from the Provincial Jail here said they are planning to start a livelihood program for detainees in order to augment the limited budget allocated by the government to address their daily needs.
Edwin Hardenico, assistant jail warden, said they are now coordinating with various non-government organizations who have expressed willingness to provide the resources and technology for the program.
Hardenico said there are also ongoing talks with the provincial government regarding the matter. He thinks the livelihood program will be implemented very soon with the help of Governor Lilia Pineda.
Hardenico said they are carefully studying how to enable the detainees to earn a living and secure additional fund for their expenses inside the jail.
He claimed that the daily budget allocation for each detainee is not more than P50, which “is really small” given the high cost of basic commodities.
The detainees, he said, make do with the meager amount anyway.
Asked about particular livelihood programs the provincial jail wanted to implement, Hardenico said that they can take advantage of the talent of the Kapampangan inmates.
He pointed out that the province is known for world-class furniture.
According to Hardenico, furniture making as a livelihood program is perfect for the detainees. (Herbert P. Mapiles
