Education sector joins hero commemoration
Wednesday, February 2, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Teachers and students from the Pampanga High School and other schools from the city joined the death anniversary commemoration of Kapampangan hero Pedro Abad Santos at the Heroes Hall on Tuesday.
This after Mayor Oscar Rodriguez lamented on the absence of the education sector during past commemoration rites of heroes.
Rodriguez, for his part, expressed his happiness with the turnout, saying what he’s after is to share the celebrations with them because these are intended for the youth. “Gusto nating isama sa kanilang consciousness ‘yong kahalagahan ng pagpapakasakit ng mga bayani nating local at national (I want to instill in them the importance of our local and national heroes’ sacrifices),” he said.
A month ago, Rodriguez was dismayed over the absence of teachers and students from different schools of the city during the commemoration of the death of national hero Jose Rizal.
“If not for the sacrifices of these heroes, wala silang ganyang tinatamasa na karapatan. Nararapat lamang na ipasok sa kanilang consciousness ‘yan, una bilang pagpapasalamat at pangalawa, bilang pagpapatibay ng kanilang pagka-Pilipino at pagkalahing Kapampangan (If not for these heroe’s sacrifices, the youth of today would not have the kind of rights they enjoy. It’s just right that we instill this in their consciousness, first as a sign of gratitude and second as a way to strengthen their sense of identity as Filipinos and being Kapampangans),” Rodriguez said.
Selfless
During the commemoration rites, Rodriguez shared that he regards Abad Santos as a “selfless” hero who turned his back on wealth and worked to form a reformist group.
“At a time that any group that is against the government is being disbanded while members are punished, he bravely formed the Socialist Party of the Philippines,” Rodriguez said.
Aside from the teachers and students, the crowd of more than 500 attendees was composed of city officials, members of the Masonry and some private individuals.
Coinciding with Abad Santos’ death anniversary was the unveiling of the calendar of events of the Kaganapan 2011, the city’s anniversary celebration.
A huge tarpaulin featuring the list of events was unveiled by Rodriguez and Kaganapan 2011 chairperson Renato Romero. (Charlene Cayabyab)
