The Top 3 Choices
If you want to taste the best of the best, go for the añejo category. It won’t be cheap but faithful tequila drinkers will stand by complexity and better flavour of this category of the drink.
1. Patron Aneja, £50 – One of the most popular brands in North American and becoming well-liked in the UK this has a smoky peppery taste with a pleasant smoothness followed by a great buzz.
2. Tequila Ocho 2007, £44 – Made from agave grown on a single estate, meaning a limited production, this has a lightly citrus, vanilla, honeyed nose with bursts of green pepper and menthol flavour. It is also the first vintage tequila.
3. Partida Tequila, £60 – Not a cheap option, but the ageing process really brings out the vanilla and citrus flavourings in this spirit. The goldon colour and well-crafted bottle will look good in any drinking cabinet. Only to be served to the most important dinner guests.
How to do a Tequila Slammer
Ask the bartender to provide you with a packet of salt and a slice of lemon. Balance this along the top of your hand from the curvature of the thumb to the forefinger. Lick the salt up first then immediately take the shot of tequila. Follow this up by biting down on the lemon slice. Remember, tequila is a heavily alcoholic spirit so enjoy responsibly.
