Foundations team up to reach Aetas

March 17, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Two foundations have teamed up to start a multi-pronged innovative learning program for indigenous pupils of public elementary schools in far-flung villages in three towns and a city in the province.
The Aweca Foundation Inc. and the UPS Foundation have started the “School Caravan for Indigenous Peoples” in public elementary schools in Sitio Target Sapangbato in Angeles City; Haduan Negrito in Marcos Village, Mabalacat; Villa Maria in Porac; and Camachile in Nabuclod, Floridablanca.
Ma. Rollyn Palo, executive director of Aweca Foundation, said the project has benefited some 665 indigenous pupils since its launching last August 16, 2010. For the second time, Aweca Foundation received grant assistance from the UPS Foundation for the School Caravan project.
The purpose is to create sustainable school-based vegetable gardens and plant nursery to supplement feeding program, develop level of learning and skills in farming using locally available resources and increase awareness or stewardship on environment of pupils from recipient public school in Pampanga, Palo said.
According to Palo, their project is part of Aweca Foundation’s Commitment to Action to Clinton Global Initiative-Asia by bringing the technical and practical skills closer and accessible to marginalized communities and families.
“We may say this School Caravan for Indigenous Peoples is one of the fruits of the lessons learned and experiences for 20 years of serving the indigenous peoples. We want to instill to the young minds of Aeta pupils the relevance of the environment to their life, culture and beliefs, and whatever they learned from this project, we hope that they will continuously pass on to their members of the family and other fellow Aeta. Our idea is simply ‘going back to basics’,” Palo said.
She added that they wish that all stakeholders in the community are involved starting from the teachers, parents, barangay leaders, existing non-government organizations and even pupils in the project.
“We also give high regard on their culture that’s why we have a regular consultation from planning to decision-making to parents and leaders in order to seize their full participation,” Palo said.
She said they have utilized the three-pronged strategies of practical training on farming; school feeding program and community literacy assistance.
“Initially, we have turned over gardening tools, plant seedlings, vegetable seeds and tapped farm technician for the establishment of school-based vegetable gardens and plant nursery,” Palo said adding that they target to propagate and maintain 3,000 mahogany seedlings in each of the four recipient-schools.
The pupils, Palo said, are taught practical farming using indigenous or organic fertilizers like animal manure and dried leaves or grass.
Moreover, they are also encouraged to plant fast crop vegetables like pechay, radish, patola, okra, ampalaya from which they would source some of their supplies for the daily feeding program.
“Out of their yields from the school gardens, parents take turns in cooking the vegetables to supplement the food for the feeding program of 66 pupils in Haduan Negrito, 110 in Sitio Target Sapangbato, 337 in Villa Maria Integrated School, and 152 in Camachile elementary schools,” she said.
Vegetable gardening is introduced not only to support school-based nutrition program but more so, to educate the households the health benefits of eating organically grown vegetables and potential economic return of farming, Palo added.
The foundation even installed one water pump for nursery, vegetable gardening and feeding purposes particularly in Sitio Target Sapangbato Elementary School.
She stressed that the active participation of all concerned is one important ingredient of the program as they are all considered stakeholders.
To ensure the success of the project, capability building activities and continuous monitoring is conducted by Aweca staff Maristrell Lugtu, Program Officer; Rey Lucinio De Leon, Project Officer and three Community Educators.
In addition, a literacy session on basic writing, reading and counting combined with mentoring on public hygiene and responsible parenting is being conducted among 91 adult learners.
“We believe that this innovative program has provided tremendous benefits to our indigenous peoples based on the feedbacks we received from the beneficiaries themselves and the results of our monitoring activities,” Palo said.
