Gas station robbers kill new guard

April 26, 2011

A SECURITY guard, on his second day at work, was shot dead by two men in a gasoline station in Consolacion town yesterday afternoon.
Another gas station in Mandaue was robbed and then set on fire by a still unidentified man at dawn yesterday.
Rolie Broca, 32, a guard working for the Giza Security Agency, was shot dead by two men who attempted to rob the Phoenix Gasoline Station in Barangay Tayud, Conso-lacion.
The culprits fled with more than P100,000 of the gasoline station’s earnings.
Broca, a resident of Barangay Canduman in Mandaue City but a native of Tabogon town in the north, was patrolling around the gasoline station when two men, on a black motorcycle, approached him around 2:50 p.m.
When the two men drew near Broca, one of them took out a KG-9 and threatened him with it.
PO1 Benjie Saladaga of the Consolacion Police Station said that the suspect armed with the firearm ordered Broca to relinquish his service firearm, a .38 pistol.
But Broca refused. One of the men shot him in the chest.
One of the suspects then ran toward the gasoline station’s main building, while his accomplice watched Broca.
Despite his injury, Broca chased after the other suspect to subdue him, but the man stopped him with a hail of bullets, just as Broca was about to open the office’s door.
After finding what they were looking for, the suspects immediately boarded their motorcycle, and fled south.
It was only 15 minutes later that the police reached the scene, less than three kilometers from the town proper.
Witnesses claimed that the two suspects were wearing tight jackets and makeshift head covers, with sunglasses.
One of the witnesses, an operator who was cleaning one of the gasoline pumps, saw the suspects’ motorcycle as they approached Broca.
Thinking that it was another customer, the witness returned to his work, but suddenly heard gunfire behind him.
It was then that he saw Broca slumping down across the main office’s door, covered in blood.
The witness and his fellow pump operators ran for cover. It was only a few minutes later that they returned to find the suspects had already fled.
Saladaga, in an interview yesterday, said that when they checked Broca’s body, the security guard’s service firearm was gone.
He also believes, based on the statements of some witnesses, that a third man was standing by near the gasoline station to serve as a lookout.
Saladaga said that after they received a report about the incident, the Consolacion police immediately put up a roadblock between Barangay Poblacion and another in the north, near Silot Bay in Liloan.
They also coordinated with the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) in conducting a checkpoint near the exit in Cansaga Bay, where the suspects were believed to have fled.
Personnel of the PNP Crime Laboratory told reporters they found seven empty shells and three deformed slugs from a KG-9 in the crime scene.
The also ordered an autopsy.
Jaime Taglupo, Broca’s superior in the security agency, said the victim was good man.
It was only Broca’s second day at the gas station yesterday. A security guard for more than five years, Broca started working in the gasoline station last Wednesday, but only returned to work yesterday after spending some time off during the Holy Week.
Taglupo said that Broca was separated from his wife and has a son.
Sun.Star Cebu tried to get the side of Maria Carmela Noel, the gasoline station’s owners, but she declined.
Double trouble
Also yesterday, an unidentified man allegedly stole about P300,000 from an LPG station in Barangay Subangdaku.
After stealing the cash, the unidentified man allegedly poured gasoline on the station’s safe and set it afire.
Luckily, employees of the gas station, who were resting nearby, were able to put the fire out.
PO3 Nelson Mayuela of the Subangdaku Police Station told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that the incident started around 1 a.m. inside the JW Auto LPG Corp. on M. Logarta St., in the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.
Reynaldo Reyes, 56, general manager of the gas station, said that the unidentified man entered the station’s main office through a sliding window.
The man then approached the office’s safe and took an estimated P300,000 of the station’s earnings.
The fire he started could have spread toward the rest of the station, if not for its employees who immediately alerted the local fire station.
The station’s office remained intact.
The Investigation and Detection Management Branch of the Mandaue City police said they are questioning the gas station’s employees as part of the investigation.
