Guv: Cabalens in Korea okay

November 30, 2010

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — With the ongoing tension between South and North Korea, Governor Lilia Pineda urged Kapampangans who have relatives working in the Korean Peninsula to stay calm as “there is nothing to worry about.”

Pineda said the labor attaché in Korea told her that the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in South Korea are safe and in good working relationship with their Korean employers.

Pampanga has at least 2,000 OFWs working in Korea. More than 1,000 of them come from Lubao town.

Pineda said the Provincial Government and second district Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo are in constant communication and coordination with the direct employers and the country’s labor attaché in the said country.

During the recent visit of the governor and the former President, they met the ambassador and employment officials of Korea to ensure the good condition and protection of Kapampangan OFWs in Korea.

Pineda noted that opportunities are waiting for applicants to Korea as there is an ongoing government-to-government hiring of some 6,000 factory workers for deployment there.

“All Kapampangan OFWs who were processed by the Human Resource Department of Korea and the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) are protected. We have complete records of their whereabouts and direct communication with their employers,” the governor said.

The Public Employment Service Office of the province reported that 85 percent of the more than 2,000 Kapampangan applicants took and passed the Korean Language Examination, a pre-requisite for those who want to work in Korea.

However, in the event that the Kapampangan OFWs in Korea and in any other countries would need the assistance of the Provincial Government, Pineda said the Pampanga Action Center for OFW Concerns (Pacoc) is ready to help them.

Pineda said Pacoc is now surveying the more than 500 barangays of the Pampanga province through the help of barangay officials to complete and update the province’s database on OFWs and determine the number of Kapampangans working abroad.

Pacoc is now working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Workers’ Welfare Agency, and POEA for linkages and immediate assistance. (Herbert Mapiles)
