Info agency taps Facebook to check on Filipino workers
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Believed to be an effective tool in reaching overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) has tapped social networking site Facebook.
The information agency launched the “PIA OFW Watch” fan page on the hit social networking site over the weekend.
PIA Director General Jose Fabia said the fan page is seen as an effective forum, communication tool, and feedback mechanism for all OFW concerns and issues.
The new fan page is a natural outgrowth of the information agency’s efforts to join President Aquino’s call to prioritize expatriate Filipino workers, especially those affected in troubled areas in the Middle Eastern region.
Fabia said he also sees the new account as a way to help government immediately respond to the needs of OFWs via social media.
“This is our response to public concerns especially those of OFWs. Whenever they have problems, they can immediately reach us through this account,” Fabia said.
The fan page was launched along with that of the Department of Labor and Employment and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Fabia said Facebook users can now read daily updates on their “News Feed” when they “like” the fan page and at the same time, readers can also share the post with family and friends on Facebook by liking and commenting on the individual updates.
He also said government can now respond to the scores of questions it receives about workers’ issues and announce other social services.
Fabia said the fan page will be monitored 24 hours and seven days a week.
