Job generation, education eyed to further drop self-rated poverty ratings

MALACANANG on Saturday committed to work for more jobs, education for all, and an improved conditional cash transfer (CCT) program to further reduce the number of Filipinos who consider themselves poor.
Self-rated poverty among Filipinos dipped two percentage points to 49 percent in June from 51 percent in March, a survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) from June 3 to 6 said.
Self-rated poverty in Luzon (outside National Capital Region) dropped 16 percentage points or from 54 percent in March to 38 percent in June. However, the survey also revealed increased ratings for NCR (34 to 43 percent) and Mindanao (49 to 62 percent). Self-rated poverty remain unchanged for the Visayas region at 61 percent.
“We’re happy na nabawasan yung mga taong nagiisip na sila ay nagugutom over the past few days or naghihirap and hopefully we can build more on this,” Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in an interview over government-run dzRB radio.
“This is why we are striving hard to create more jobs and sa CCT pinupush natin na mas dumami ang beneficiaries nito,” she added.
In the 2011 General Appropriations Act, the Department of Social and Welfare and Development (DSWD), the agency implementing the CCT program, received the highest budget increase of 123 percent from the previous year.
In the proposed P1.816-trillion national budget for 2012, the DSWD will again receive the largest budgetary increase among the departments, from P34.3 billion to P53.6 billion. The budget hike will allow the agency to support three million households or an additional of 700,000 from the previous target.
“Alam natin na ang CCT ay salbabida na nabibigay natin sa pamilyang nangangailangan. Kaakibat din niyan yung edukasyon kasi yung CCT, contrary dun sa criticism ng iba na dole out ito, ang kondisyon naman ay to send their kids to school kasi ang panlaban natin sa kahirapan ay talagang edukasyon,” Valte noted.
