Lagman accuses Arroyo of ouster plot

MANILA — Albay Representative Edcel Lagman is accusing former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of plotting his ouster as the House Minority Leader.
According to Lagman, the former President, who is currently detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City for electoral sabotage charges, called an emergency meeting Wednesday night in her hospital suite with her “constant travelling companions in her past foreign trips.”
Quezon Representative Danilo Suarez, who earlier claimed to assume the Minority Leader post by January 16, met with the former President together with Representatives Ma. Amelita Villarosa (Occidental Mindoro) and Martin Romualdez (Leyte)
Lagman, however, stressed that he remained confident that majority of the House opposition had signed a resolution retaining him as minority leader for his “responsible and credible stewardship of the minority.”
“Arroyo and her group are trying to convince my supporters not to honor their signatures,” the Minority Leader said.
Lagman insists that his term-sharing agreement with Suarez was limited to the speakership if the then Lakas-Kampi would win the speakership, but did not extend to the minority leadership. Lagman lost the speakership role to Quezon City Representative Feliciano Belmonte Jr.
Lagman has been the Minority Leader for the past 18 months of the 15th Congress.
It was mainly through his efforts that the priority development assistance fund (PDAF) allocations for the districts of Suarez, Romualdez, Villarosa, and Bohol Representative Arthur Yap were released, he said.
The release of the PDAF allocation–popularly known as pork barrel–for some minority members has been delayed but the House leadership earlier said it was not intentional.
Suarez earlier said that members of the minority bloc agreed in an opposition caucus that Lagman should honor the “gentleman’s agreement” they made before he was elected as Minority Leader.
Suarez said he is ready to assume the position once his colleagues in the minority party decide to replace Lagman.
