Mall declared ‘ready as ever’ for disasters

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Authorities from the Provincial Disaster Risk Management Office and officials of SM City Pampanga on Tuesday declared the mall as “ready as ever” for disasters like earthquakes and fire.
During the earthquake and fire evacuation drill on Tuesday, assistant mall manager Lana Erroba said the emergency and rescue teams from the mall are always on the alert to protect and help the more than 60,000 daily customers of SM City Pampanga in case of emergencies.
“We can never be prepared enough. But just in case, we are as ready as we can to assist and make our tenants and customers aware in case disasters strike,” Erroba said, adding the evacuation drill is conducted in all SM malls nationwide.
Locally, the simulation drill, which is done step by step according to procedures and plans, started in 2008 in collaboration with the local government units of San Fernando and Mexico, the provincial government’s rescue team, Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection.
This year’s drill took on different scenarios involving 16 victims — from retrieval, first aid treatment down to their transport to hospitals.
“There is much improvement than the previous year but we suggest for the provision of safety nets or bags for the protection of people involved in the drill,” said Fire Marshall Sr. Supt. Artemio Llena.
Other critics of the drill like Police Provincial Director Edgardo Tinio called for “more practice” to make the evacuation plan’s implementation as perfect as possible and to make customers and tenants there aware of the urgency of such drills.
“Malaking tulong ang mga drills na ito para maiwasan ang mga sakuna,” Mayor Teddy Tumang said.
For his part, City of San Fernando Fire Marshall Raymond Manimbo called on SM officials to update the evacuation contingency plan to suit the scenario during actual mall hours: “We have inspected the mall for many times now and all that needs to be done is update the contingency plan as well. But basing it from last year, there have been a lot of improvements.”
Engr. Lulu Alingcastre of the provincial disaster coordinating council lauded the mall’s management for its readiness in times of disasters and vowed for continuous support in the training of rescue and emergency response teams.
“It was a job well done and we hope you can share this knowledge and experience to your customers and tenants through a heightened information campaign,” said Alingcastre.
