Mayor blames San Fernando on toxic waste build-up

Tuesday, January 18, 2011
MACABEBE – This town’s mayor recently blamed the lack of attention by officials of the City of San Fernando on the growing problem of toxic waste allegedly originating from the city’s river.

Mayor Annette Balgan said she has already written a letter addressed to Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, informing him about the problem and to prevent establishments under his jurisdiction from further dumping industrial wastes into the river.

Balgan pointed out that the livelihood of her constituents, which depend on the river, has been totally affected. Most of the affected residents come from barangays Saplang David and Caduang Tete.

Among the establishments being complained here are La Tondeña, San Miguel and Pasudeco. It was also claimed that these companies failed to put up and maintain their respective water treatment facilities.

Balgan believes that the City Government officials can regulate the said companies because permits and other licenses emanate from them. In fact, she said they could ask these firms how and where they dispose their industrial waste.
