Mayoral bet’s husband faces estafa case
MABALACAT — The husband of a mayoralty candidate in this first-class municipality is reportedly facing estafa case as gleaned in a document obtained from the City Prosecutor’s Office in nearby Angeles City.
John Sambo, husband of Marjorie who is running for mayor in this town under Nacionalista Party (NP), is now facing an estafa case that was lodged by a certain Carlos Koo, vice president of NCR Construction Supply Inc.
The estafa case was lodged against Sambo on September 18, 2006 after he failed to pay the amount of P1,049,737 to the NCR Construction Supply Inc. for over two years.
The amount stemmed from the various construction supplies that Sambo purchased from NCR between September 17, 2003 up to March 10, 2004. Despite the repeated plea of NCR, Sambo has refused to settle the amount.
Koo noted that Sambo has issued post-dated cheques marked October 29, 2005 in the amount of P164,361.53. The May Bank refused to encash the cheque because the account has “insufficient funds.”
Demand letters were sent to Sambo on May 18 and 20, 2006 but he refused to settle the amount. To make matters worse, Sambo shoed away messenger Danilo De Guzman who delivered a demand letter to him on June 1, 2006.
Sambo had reportedly duped several construction supply firms who are now contemplating on filing estafa charges against him.
This developed after former construction workers of Sambo, who were illegally dismissed four years ago, lodged an illegal dismissal complaint against him.
The complainants have also junked the candidacy of Marjorie, calling on their relatives not to vote for the mayoral bet.
The 13 workers of John Sambo Construction firm were from Madapdap and Mawaque Resettlements. They were identified as Neil Basilio, Jonie Pacia, Jeffrey Cunanan, Celestino Vita, Eddie Canlas, Noel Basilio, Ric David, Rommel Bundalian, Noel Bautista, Lazaro Zamora, William Enriquez, Joel Cunanan, and Winsly Enriquez.
In the documents obtained at the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), it was indicated that most of them had been hired between 1999 and February 2006 as drivers, welders, masons and operators of construction machineries.
The NLRC noted that the dismissed workers were assigned in various construction projects of Sambo, such as the Dau Bus Terminal, Capas National Shrine, SM Clark, and road projects in Pulilan, Bulacan, City of San Fernando and Macabebe town.
The dismissed workers revealed that they were made to work by Sambo from 5 p.m. to midnight, even during holidays, without getting overtime pays and their 13th month pays.
The aggrieved workers noted that they were discharged from their jobs after complaining on the delay of their salaries.
The Mabalacat workers said they will actively campaign against the candidacy of Marjorie, wife of Sambo.
“Marami din po kaming mga kapatid at kamag-anak dito sa Mabalacat. Magkakampanya po kami laban kay Marjorie Sambo para na rin po mabigyan ng hustisya ang karumal dumal na ginawa sa amin ni John Sambo (We have a lot of relatives here in Mabalacat. We will campaign against Marjorie Sambo to give justice to what her husband had done to us),” the workers said in a statement.
“Alam din po naming na si John Sambo lamang ang nagtutulak kay Marjorie upang kumandidato upang makuha ang lahat ng kontrata siguro sa Mabalacat (We were told that John Sambo is pushing Marjorie to run for the May elections for him to get all the contracts in Mabalacat),” they added.
Reports have it that John Sambo urged his wife to run against his father Mabalacat Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales after losing contracts at the Xevera Mabalacat housing project.
“Kawawa naman po ang mga trabahador ni John Sambo. Naranasan po namin ito at ayaw naming maulit sa ibang tao (We pity the workers of John Sambo. We have gone through the difficulties and we don’t want other people to go through this),” the workers said.
