McArthur Highway ‘belongs to everyone’
December 23, 2010
ANGELES CITY – A former city councilor said the McArthur Highway is more of a community-driven road that belongs to the people in general.
Green Youth Brigade Louie Reyes’s statement was made after a businessman issued a statement saying “there would be no investors if a certain area has no good road networks”.
“It (McArthur Highway) is more of a community-driven road and does not just belong to the investors alone. It belongs to you and me. It belongs to everyone. It belongs to the community,” Reyes said.
He added that whoever planted the acacia trees along the McArthur Highway has a noble cause.
“Why a noble cause? A noble cause is a cause of all causes. When Mt. Pinatubo erupted, our houses collapsed but the acacia trees were still there. The trees guided us,” he said.
“They gave us directions to our destiny. It guided the community. Please let us not cut the trees. Please let us not forget our history with them,” Reyes added.
Rene Romero, president of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham) earlier said that what entices investors to put up businesses in certain areas are good infrastructure and facilities.
“These investors should have good access to a certain area. If there is access, then there would be interaction and then progress,” Romero said in an interview.
Romero had supported the road-widening project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
At the same time, Reyes and his group are renewing their call to save the trees along the McArthur Highway, otherwise known as the Manila North Road (MNR).
Reyes said the trees emit clean air, absorb floodwaters and provide natural canopy as protection from the heat of the sun.
Reyes earlier defended the Acacia Strip perspective of Architect Edgar M. Salas, an architect-professor of the Holy Angel University.
He said Salas’s perspective is a worthwhile proposal the DPWH needs to consider. This, he said, is an alternative to save the trees along McArthur Highway.
“The Acacia Strip perspective is feasible. The Diamond service road in Balibago, Angeles City is a good reference for this. Crossing the service road is safer than without a service road. The commercial areas will benefit from service roads particularly during the annual Tigtigan Terakan Keng Dalan,” Reyes stated.
The Diamond service road has been there for more than 35 years, according to Reyes.
“It is worthwhile to consider service roads to save the trees. Please let us not cut the trees. Let us connect with them,” Reyes said. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
