SUPPORTERS and allies of former city mayor Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno expressed delight and hope over the appointment at Atty. Sixto Brillantes as Comelec Chairman.
Chairman Brillantes, of course, was the lead lawyer of Nepomuceno in his electoral protest against Mayor Pamintuan. Brillantes has become Blueboy’s good friend, too, I learned from the handsome columnist in the next page.
The new poll chief, on the other hand, was the law professor of Edpam at San Beda College where Ed was among his “brightest students”, his spokesman Deo said.
Understandably, Nepo followers would rejoice after Malacañang announced Brillantes as the new Comelec head. Considering things being equal in resources and legal clout, they believe Blueboy now enjoys a psychological advantage over Edpam in the protest case.
In reaction to his lawyer’s appointment as Comelec chief, Blueboy said, “President Noy picked a brilliant choice. He (Brillantes) knows the ins and outs of the poll body. He is capable of instituting electoral reforms as he could swiftly resolve the much delayed electoral protests in the Comelec. He can also harmonize the efficient coordination of among regional, provincial, and city offices of Comelec.
“With regards to our case vs. protestee Pamintuan, the new Chair will remain neutral as possible but he will stay a close friend of mine.”
Mayor Ed for his part has welcomed Brillantes’s appointment saying, “He was my professor at the San Beda law school and have known him as a very intelligent and upright man. As Comelec Chair, it certainly bodes well to the nation’s long desire for free and honest elections – the very foundation on which our democracy rests.
“It does not matter that Atty. Brillantes is the lawyer of an electoral protest against me by former Mayor Nepomuceno. I respect him and look up to him so much as to doubt his integrity. Further I am extremely confident about my case. Again I congratulate my esteemed former professor.”
Upon his assumption of office, the Palace sounded out the new poll chief to look into priority proposals for electoral reforms. Among these is the speedy resolution of election cases, basically to dismiss all apparently baseless complaints.
Angeleños will now watch and monitor if the Nepomuceno protest versus Pamintuan will be found to be “baseless” and therefore subject to dismissal, or meritorious as to prosper toward annulling and setting aside the proclamation of the elected mayor of Angeles City.
